Replaced the starter on my 86 today, and in the process destroyed the sensor in front of it. (Don't ask) Is this the knock sensor? I thought I would give it a shot and ran it through emissions, and it failed HC, Nox, and CO. On the way home, being a little upset, I got into it and noticed the knock. That was when I realized I screwed up the knock sensor (I had guessed it was the oil temp sensor ) The entire emissions system in this car was replaced two years ago, and it passed fine. If it's not the knock sensor is there any specific component I can look at that would cause the above symptoms? I am trying to get this car ready to sell, and would like to minimize my outlay.
A bad knock sensor will screw up your timing, which I can see it messing up your emissions. I would go on to say it could make your car run rich if it is pulling timing and keeping the same amount of fuel coming in. Get that replaced
