The balancer on my 85 is an 8 inch external balance. I am pretty sure that the stock one should be a smaller internal balance type.
The only markings on the one I have is on the back side where it is stamped M89.
Does anyone know what this balancer is?, as I think it may have slipped a little.
The front cross member must have been modified. Why do you ask? What will you be doing, once you know? That damper indicates a minimum of an externally balanced 383 or something bigger.
The reason I ask is that is what is on my car, and yes, it is real close to the crossmember.
Was thinking that this does not look right, being so close to the crossmember.
Do not know the history of the motor, how can you tell if it is a 383 motor?
You should re-measure, I dont think you can get the engine in with an 8" dia. piece and still get the motor mount bolts in.
I "think" 6-3/4" is the largest you can install.
LD is right, unless someone clearanced(cut metal, welded, etc) or banged the cross member under there for clearance.I have not ever heard of a 8 inch damper fitting in the stock location without some serious rubbing!

If you live near a Nascar track (in South Carolina you probably have one next door) check to see if they have a "whistler", a device that screws into a spark plug hole to measure the displacement. Otherwise, you'll probably have to pull a head and measure the bore and strike, to know for sure.
Meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out what "forum slange" is. At one point I started to second guess my judgment, but it appears I was probably correct the first time, after all. It is nice when someone backs you up. Thanks dock351, brimis, and q2blaster@work, too.
First of all, maybe I let the guy insulting me in one of my posts get the better of me, and for that I apologize!!
Second there is an 8" balancer for a 350, why would you steer him towards thinking he's got a bigger motor, all he ahs to do is feel the back of the balancer, if its a 400 type balancer you can feel where its counterweighted.
Third, I don’t doubt anybody’s knowledge; I guess I didn’t like being insulted so I struck back! Apologies to everyone.
My 350 had an 8" ballancer on it, but it was a vortec motor from a 96 truck. It hit the cross member before the weight was on the mounts. I replaced it with a 6 3/4". Don't forget about the front spring that goes through there.

First. If the insult fits...wear it.
Second. If you read the first sentence of the opening post you would have read, "The balancer on my 85 is an 8 inch external balance.". Yes, there are 350s with 8" dampers, but I have yet to see one that is externally balanced. If you have information to the contrary, enlighten us. Don't criticize us (ME). BTW, you feel the back of BIG block dampers for the imbalance weight. On the small block, it is evident from the front.
Third. I DO doubt the knowledge, of some. Your attack in your "Second", ignoring information plainly available from the beginning, makes your apology ring a little hollow. it also reinforces my initial comments.
I have a 85 vette. It came stock with a 6-3/4 dampner. I bought a ZZ4 with a 8" dampner. It hit the cross member......NO WAY WOULD A 8" FIT WITHOUT MODIFING THE CROSS MEMBER,.
Have done some checking over the weekend. Do not know what you mean when you say you can feel for something on the balancer. I pulled it off over the weekend, on the outside edge of it( the surface that would be laying on a table if you stood it straight up) does have a section milled out of it, maybe about 1/3 the circumference of the balancer, and about 1/2 the width of the edge.
Also, the flexplate on the car is not the original one as it has 6 bolts attaching it to the torque convertor and the dust shield will not fit on without it rubbing the flexplate.
From what I am hearing, it looks like I may have some sort of stroker motor here.
My main problems with it is that it vibrates a little over about 4500rpm and it seems like I am getting some spark knock.
Am just trying to fix these problems, have timing set to 6 degrees btdc, and everything else is also set to factory spec.
Sounds like I need some help here, maybe this motor needs to be set to different specs.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
