Default Where to mount the MAT SENSOR??

I wanted to mount the mat sensor a differ location other than under the plenum near the distributor on my 85. I didn't want to buy a kit for $50 from midamerica, so I'll just buy another sensor and run a jumper wire to the air box--but I don't know of a perfect place to drill the hole in air box for a permanent install. This is to get a cooler air reading for the computer-and mounting it back under the superram is OUT OF THE QUESTION.

I relocated mine to the top rear of the air box (horizontal )just before the part where it tapers ups to the MAF mount and extended the wires.

Curious why you would want to relocate the MAT sensor to give a cooler reading to the computer when the air is actually at a higher temp by the time it reaches your cylinder.

It would be better to reprogram the computer to compensate for your mods rather than to try and trick the computer.

well I did say I cannot reattach the mat sensor plug to the underside of superram--I tried working on that a couple hours yesterday and finally threw up my hands and said no more. Unless I remove the actual plenum-I cannot slip the wire over the sensor-I don't have angle pliers either to do that job with. So it would be easier to just relocate this thing and leave the old sensor in its current place to prevent vacuum leakage. This isn't for power gain purposes.

Get a rubber groumet, some length of wire & black spiral-wrap then cut off the connector under the plenum, solder the new wire to the old, run the new wire inside spiral-wrap over under the brake booster to the LH fender well, along the felder well and over to the side of the air box. Then splice the old MAT connector into the two new wires, drill a hole in the side of the air filter lid, install the groumet and slide the old MAT through the groumet.

You can get a brass plug to fill the MAT hole under the plenum. Just unscrew the MAT and take it to Lowe's to match up the thread.

BTW, the location of the MAT under the hot plenum gives an erroneous intake air temp. reading.

The MAT sensor only plays a role in fueling on speed density systems. On the MAF systems its main function is for EGR operation.
