Not worrying about the headlight issue, but I don't have courtsey lights if I open either door, but if I use the headlight switch they work. Is this mean the courtsey light issue is a bad timer or ??? Any help here would really be appreciated.
I have a new problem, in that when I open the door I don't get any interior lights and the security in flashing in the info center and when I turn the head lights on and start the engine the chimes keep going. Any idea of what the problem ???? Nothing I can find on this in the factory service manual, and ideas ??? This is on my 1986 vert.
Im not sure whats wrong but check the door ajar switch thats on the door itself. Its a black button type switch. Is yours stuck closed?
When you open the door does the black button pop out or is it stuck?
The door jam switch closes circuit with the door open and there are 3 switch contacts in the LH door jam switch. One contact goes to the courtesy light timer, one goes to the alarm and the third goes to the theft deterrent system. All three contacts are grounded via the body of the switch. I would check the white wire on the door switch with the door open (should be grounded). You are not supposed to measure resistance on the white wire if the timer is plugged in, so disconnect the timer OR if you have a modern ohmeter that has a diode test position, its ohmeter should be safe to use on the white wire in OHMS position. Do the courtesy lights work if you open the RH door? If not, you may have a defective courtesy light timer.
I never thought of checking the right door, thanks and if it doesn't work I will check the timer out, if I can remember where it is located
That still doesn't answer the headlight problem, does anyone have any ideas on that one ??
IS your keyhole on the ignition all the way back?If there is some slop in it,it may cause the headlights to sound the noise if it isnt in the correct position.
Check your keyholes to the doors as well.Turn it back and forth both ways to ensure it isnt affecting the alarm system by being in the wrong spot.had this happen before the door alarm switches inside of the door keyhole went bad.
No problem with the locks or key, and I don't have any courtsey light with either door open, so guess I will start with that issue and worry about the headlight issue later. Thanks and if anyone has any idea, let me know.
Here is the diagnosis from my electrical service supplement (87).
Unplug the courtesy light delay timer with the doors closed and the light switch off. On the timer socket, measure the voltage from ground to the white wire (should measure 12v, if not, check white wire for an open circuit). Measure voltage between the white (+) and the black (gnd) wires (should be 12v, if not, check the black wire for connection to ground). Measure the voltage from the orange wire to ground (should be 12v, if not, check the orange wire for open circuit). Measure the voltage between the orange wire (+) and the white (gnd) wire (should be 0 v, if not, check both door jam switches and the white wire for a short to ground). Now, open either door and measure the voltage between the orange (+) wire and the white (gnd) wire (should be 12v, if not, check both door jam switches and the white wire for an open circuit, ie open circuit white wire, or door jam switch body not making electrical connection to ground [usually due to corrosion].
If you measure all voltages to be normal and your courtesy lights will not come on, then you have a defective courtesy light timer and you need to replace it.
I thought of bare wires and I have auto and checked for a wire issue, but if anyone knows where the sensor is for the headlights that would cause this proble, as I can't find any info in the service manual. There has to be a reason as nothing changed in the car.
The Anti Lock Break light is on.
The car is running and I turn the park lights or head lights on and the dinger dings.
I open the door the interior lights come on.
I close the doors and the interior lights take a while to shut off, as when you leave your car and close the door with the car off.
So it seems like the car does not realize it is running.
Your thoughts?
Thanks
Kam
It is doing what it is suppose to do on the interior lights, as to the anti lock and the chimes when you turn on the lights, well I have the same problem and can seem to track it down as to the problem. I have just given up on the anti locks as they still work and I just disconnected the chimes for the head light issue after I spent 2 days trying to find out why, so that isn't the answer, but it gets rid of the chimes !!! You get any other answers that work, let me know .
