Hood Release Cables - can this be easy?
Need to replace the release cables on my 86. The cables are stiff, cracked and melted. The right hood latch engages part of the time only when I manually reset the latch.
So before I start, I would guess the best tool to have is an emergency release tool. No reason to have the project go sour the very first time the hood closes.
What is bothering me is the routing of the right side cable. Does this run in front of the distributor? If so, where? The cable got melted when it came in contact with the EGR tube. So thats a bad route.
IIRC it is secured to the firewall, so it would go behind the distributor.
It helps to have someone outside tugging while you are inside pushing it through. The only real problem when installing mine was getting the rubber grommet in place, but I'm a big guy and don't fit under the dash very well.

The grommet is the toughest part of the job. On my 86' the hole in the firwall and the hole in the foam glued to the cabin side of the firwall didn't match up exactly, so it was joyous to say the least. Also remember to remove the old cable you will have to push the old grommet out of the old cable. I used a long straight screwdriver. Look at the new part and it will be pretty self expanitory.
Check over your work and adjust the latch pulls on the ends of the cables before you close the hood and you should be good to go.
