The rubber is a little bit thicker than a 1/4. Removing it and putting something thinner in it's place will lower the front more than you think.
As for removing the rubber mounts that are OEM, not on the ends, I didn't say take them all the way off, just cut them down to a 1/4 or so, I think it's more stable than those little bitty wedges in the kits and would locate the spring better.
Once you get the spring out, it's apparent what you need to do.
