Default Scanners

What scanners are you guys using for diagnosis on L98's, was looking at buying an Auto Xray 6000. These units are supposed to be good for obd1 and obd2 cars, since i have an 89 c4 vette, 94 camaro and an 02 c5 vette on the way it is probably wise to get a scanner that can do all the cars. Has anyone had any experience with this scanner, if so any limitations or problems with it?

Thanks

Auto Xrays are great scanners, I've used them plenty of time on my 96 and my roommates 2000. When you're getting one, just be sure to get one that has a back-lit display, it'll make life a lot easier if you try to scan the car in the dark!!

Here's my scanner.

A paper clip and this website and/or a GM Shop Manual is all I've ever needed.

That's good for basic code retrieval, but a good scanner will also show you the real-time fuel trims, timing, O2 sensor readings, collant temp etc...

Of course. I'm not trying to steer the guy away from the scanner.

I have the Actron 9150. It has real time live data and all of the OBD cables including 3 OBD1 cables and 1 OBD cable. It also does IM readiness (emissions), can print out the info and of course reads/erases codes.

The Actron 9145/9150 is a great scanner, it paid for itself the first time I used it on my wife's truck. I was getting tired of driving to my buddy's shop 30 miles away to use his scanner everytime the check engine light came on in one of our cars. Pep Boys has the 9145 for $219 and an ODB 1 GM cable was only $29. I was going to get the 9150 kit which consists of the 9145 and OBD1 cables for GM/Ford/Chrysler but I said to myself who would ever buy a Ford or especially a Chrysler ? I now consider this one of the most valuable tools I own. It's awesome!

A simple datalogging cable and a laptop is your best choice.

I have one of the older AutoXrays with the 2 line display, and it has worked fine on '89vette when I scanned it. Also have scanned some newer Fords, GM, and Hondas with it with no problems. The only drawbacks with it may be that when scanning real time data, you can only view one parameter at a time, not sure if the newer ones let you see more or not. Also mine is limited to 30 frame captures of real time data. (once a second for 30 seconds, or twice a secord for 15 seconds...) The cheapest place to buy one I've seen is http://www.autotestsys.com/Merchant2...tegory_Code=ST , they also sell the new style ones.
