Me too-about 2 years ago ('86 Astro)-only I don't know exactly what in the TC crapped out. My buddy the tranny man said one of the elements has an aluminum disk with a steel hub and the disk fails. Then the rotating hub shreds the disk and pollutes the trans with aluminum particles. Only fix is to pull it all apart, clean it out, new TC and a filter on the return line from the cooler. I had to pull the govenor out twice after the rebuild and free it up and it still never shifted quite the same but was reasonable enough to keep driving. The van has over 300K on it now.

The opposite happens somtimes too. A failure in the trans tosses the trash into the converter,. Then, at a later untimely date, the converter tosses the trash back into the trans. This is why a new converter is always the wat to go on a full rebuild. The lock up converters will not flush like an old th-350 converter will.

Default Update

Got the tranny out and after taking the torque converter off the tranny and looking inside it looks like its the TC has broken up, in the circled area there is a bit missing

Now it is time to find a new TC and i was thinking of one with a higher stall somewhere around 2200/2400 what do you all think

Hi Adi, Sorry about tranny failure please let me know any updates using my PM, Cuz i got the same problem just few minutes ago, this is rebuilt tranny from Mad Dog with hard parts, they installed 2800 rpm TC at the same time.

I got exactly same problem just like yours, it rev high between 3000-4000 rpm to just move barely 15-20 mph speed in any gear, No oil leak and i checked oil its perfectly levelled may be i have the same problem as yours TC, i do have another TC 2200 rpm too. Hope its a TC problem than i can just swap with the one i have spare one. Let me know any updates and i do the same. Good luck for both us.

I'd say that unless you can locate every nick, chip, and filing that came off of the old converter, you are risking a new converter as well as your old trans if you don't do or have the trans disassembled, checked and cleaned out. Your symptoms indicated problems beyond what you've pictured.

RACE ON!!!

Ive allready have the box appart and everything looks very good, the box that is in there is out of an 87 according to the # stamped on the box and it has the 30 spline shaft, it even has the seal retainer on the pump housing so it is the 86 and up box.

I have had no problems what so ever with the box until the TC broke and I hav'nt driven the car since then, when the TC broke up I still had all of the gears inc the lockup it was just that you had to rev the car up higher it was just like a 4000 stall TC

I also have to rev her up to get her to move, I am not driving the car anymore needless to say but it's such a downer

GoodLuck with the car....Keep us informed
