I have done similar but MSD does not make a module (5 pin) have the blaster coil in cap and have the accel module. Mine is a 90 HEI distr.

I started with the stock distr. for a base that worked (didn't want to go w/external coil small cap)
Yes, it has 7 total but the co. refered to it as a "5 pin" (5 one side 2 the other). The problem was the module availability as for some reason MSD doesn't make it they make a 83645 (4+2) w/rev limiter and will not work. The accell was the only one (hp module) I found at the time. The coil is a blaster (2025 or 8025) dont remember the no.s off hand, one is taller (super blaster) and one is the direct OEM replacement. I wanted to use all MSD parts so the cap is a older style HEI big cap w/the "L" clamps, had to cut those off and drill out the holes a little to accept regular screws, the rotor fits no problem, then the coil, and cover obviosly fits fine (this allowed all stock wiring). The accell module, msd cap, rotor, coil cover, and coil was from summit.
I am in a similar situation as yourself as the new set-up will be spinning to 6,000 so I will find out how good it really is (this week actually), if not I was also looking at incorporating a 6al or 7al(or d) for rev limiter and timing adjust, hope this helps
I just saw your address, if you need I can look through my stuff and find the pn's I used if you cant locate through the summit on line site, just pm, me no problem.

Or save your dough and stick with the stock HEI. It will easily light the fire in a 396 to and through 6000 rpms.

I think that is an excellent point as some believe it is a performance gain.
I needed to replace wires, cap, etc., and the reason I went that way, is because I wanted to have copper conductors, and use their plug wires, so I just went ahead and got the rest as package (package price actually became less than OEM, it was last year anyway).
As to any further on MSD, I noticed NO gain in performance in anyway.

A friend had a MSD distributor on his car and said there was no gain in performance or mileage on his 88 C4. He sold it and reinstalled the stock HEI with a ungraded cap and rotor topped off with an Accel coil.
Same ET's (12.70's at 106.00 mph) as the MSD and the gas mileage remains at 27 plus on the highway with 3.07 gears. BTW, it's an automatic with a 9.5 to 1, 383 stroker and meets California emissions.

I run a stock HEI with good wires and coil and fresh module and spin it to 6000 on the track with 11/1's - no problem.

It takes a pretty stout engine package and extreme usage to exceed the capabilities of a good HEI. There is probably more money wasted on unnecessary ignition "upgrades" than any other automotive system. Think of all the air foils you can buy for the cost of some of those pretty electrical and electronic trinkets.

ok, i understand the point....i dont say..hey i wan´t spend money, i have enough....

if you search around a bit..ok, mostly advertisings, the all say, the stock HEI is out at 4500rpm, or so....and you should go to an -mostly their- upgrade...

it would be nice to stay with the stock dist, at least no troubles....
