Default clunk from rear diff?

I have a 87 auto with 130k on it. Once I drive it for a few miles then stop and shift from park to drive I get a loud clunk from the rear diff. It only does it then, not when I 1st start it up and its cold. I had the u-joints checked and thanks not it. Im assuming its the gears, any ideas? Also anyone got some gears for sale? thanks

I actually think that this *could* be the C-beam bolts being loose. When you leave from start, torque is transferred to the C-beam and if the bolts are loose it will clunk.

This happened to me when I replaced my clutch and did not re-tighten the bolts after initial install.
(I now have C-beam plates from zfdoc.com which completely fixes the problem)

The second scenario, is that the splines on your half shaft-wheel bearings are rusted. This is causing a binding which causes the clunk on initial movement. You can pull the yoke out of the wheel bearing and clean up and grease up the splines and that may also resolve it.

Both much cheaper than new gears!
Good luck!

Could be your rear bearings. At 130K, if they are original, they probably need changing. Mine gave up at 112K, and that is pretty typical.

Well that's a lot better than a clunk from the front diff. Sorry, couldn't resist. For these car's that's kinda like saying "Hot Water Heater." If it's hot why do you need to heat it?

If you've already checked the u-joints I would certainly look into the rear wheel bearings and check the bolts on the C-beam. You might hear it referred to as the torque arm, I usually do, but that's not completely accurate.

While you are checking wheel bearings and C-beam bolts I would take another look at the U-joints. What you describe fits U,s 2 a T.
