Mine came out facing left/right, so thats the way I put the new one back in. I have no clue if that was the correct way or not but everything seems to be working fine so far.
Can't help with the orientation but I am wondering which replacement
strainer / sock you have. If it is the canoe-style, where did you source
it and was it about $7 - or considerably more $$?
This has been discussed a couple times recently. The consensus was: There is no consensus. I would have it go front-back (either way).
My '85 has a plastic tray in the tank, so going side-side might have interfered. I put mine in with the 'long' part of the sock forward just to make sure that the sock would not be pinched. My thinking was that the angle of the assembly might put the long end against the base of the tank if I pointed it toward the back. (FYI: I have the cheapie-canoe style.)
I dont think it matters which way it goes on. I put mine parallel with the rear axle.
I would recommend putting some gasoline proof gasket/adhesive (autozone) around the sock/pump mating surface if you can't press it on vary well. The sock fell off of the fuel pump that was previously put on my car and caused some really annoying problems, not to mention breaking the pump by sucking up debris.
Welll - funny you mentioned that - I replaced the fuel pump yesterday and the sock. car started right up (something it hasn't done for a long time) . I went for a spirited run and I did a quick 180 and about 1/8 mile down the road it acted like it ran out of gas. I got to the corner and took a hard turn and it did it again.
After I got home I parked it because I was doing a brake job on my friends '99. I wnet to start it later that night and it wont start - I dont hear the pump either.
I am going to pull it out tonight and see what the problem is.
I put mine in front back, going with the same theory mentioned above. I also felt the sock would get pinched if it was put in line with the rear axle. Worked well for two years now.

I put mine in front to back, hoping it would lay better in the plactic tray at the bottom of the tank. I believe mine came out in line with the rear axle
