My method involves removing the plugs and spinning the motor over by hand. When completed, I install a new set of plugs.
I like to set all of my intake valves then exhaust. On a piece of paper, I write the firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. I get the #1 cylinder in the proper position and adjust the valve, I then cross off that cylinder, turn the motor over 1/4 turn and adjust the next one in the firing order. Once intakes are complete, I move to the exhaust.
