Default Question about my rear end...

I am having the rear end in my 84 changed from 3.07 to a 3.73 and my guy is telling me that the new rear end is going to make more noise than the original gears?

Is this nuts or is this honest?

Also, how much adjusting should have to be done to the tranny to get the speedo to read right? I thought you bought the part, put it in, and you're off and running with the correct numbers on your dash...

Thanks

A properly setup rear end should make no noticable extra noise over the original, thats why this job is best done by someone with alot of experience.

But they can be noisy, he's being honest.

I dont know if something might be different for 84 w/ regard to the speed sensor and dash readout.

But if he's saying they "will be noisy" you may have the wrong guy!

It could be honest. GM/Dana never made a 3.73 gear set for the Dana 36. Therefore, by default, you are going to have aftermarket, replacement gears. Some brands are noisier than others. Your installer may be familiar with the gears he is installing. He may also be C.Y.A.ing, early on.

No adjusting. Buying the "right part" and putting it in, depends a lot on if there IS a right part. GM never combined the 3.73 gears with the 700R4 (or 4+3) transmission and 26" tall tires in a stock configuration. For many C4 gear changes it is simply a matter of duplicating the factory set up and you're done. Your set up doesn't duplicate anything GM produced. If this were my car, I'd use a grey, 15 tooth, pn 8642620 drive gear, a purple, 43 tooth, pn 25513050, driven gear, and your old VSS. For an automatic, the tail shaft housing has to be removed, to get to the drive gear. So while the "C" beam is out to drop the rear end is an opportune time to change the drive gear. I have been told that the OD unit has to be disassembled to change the drive gear in a 4+3.

The fact that it is a 1984 presents no unique problems.

Poor word choice. I've seen several on here report that Richmond gears are more prone to noise, however I have no experience with them. I find it a little hard to believe that a gear properly installed and set-up would be objectionably noisy. I've never put together a differential that made noise.

I have had quiet 4.56s however, they were not in a C4.
But nothing makes a nice summer drive suck like a howling rear end!
