I'm looking for the right "crane compucam " for my 85 vette I been looking into the Summit racing web site, there's several ones. Can somebody give me some heads ups. I got headers , chip , 32 pds injectors, Im just looking for some rattering noise.
ive been looking at the z-409, made by tpis. They seem to know what they are doing as far as tpi stuff. i called them they said this is a good cam lopey idle but still good enough on the street. Ive gotta do some research but its lookin good. go to www.tpis.com they have all kinds of stuff just for our engines.
32lb injectors are probably too big for anything but the most radical combination
I couldn't agree MORE!
There are a lot of variables involved in selecting the "right" camshaft for a particular combination. So we need more details on both the engine/car and its intended purpose.
Based on what you've posted so far I'd have to say that your injector size and the cam you're considering are too big.
Hi. The injectors on the 85 are larger than the following years. They are 24lbs stock. So if they work all right use them 32lbs are far too large for the cast iron heads that is stock on the 85. You will not have enough flow in the heads to utilize the 32 lbs unless you have a supercharger on wot.
If you increase the stock fuel pressure (think it should be around 36psi) then you will get more lbs from the injectors and the spray pattern will be a bit better. But you can have an indication on how the inhjectors perform with measuring the oxygen sensors voltage,on wot. it should be about 875 mV if I am not too wrong.
Good luck
First, as so many have pointed out, the injectors are too big. Your O2,ECM with the MAF will do a lot of adjusting but I suspect you are outside their limits. If you are interested in a Crane cam why not ask Crane. They will be glad to make a recommendation.
An old racer gave me this sage advice about cam selection: Do all your homework and select the smallest cam you think you can live with, then go one step lower.
No matter what you select make sure the 85 springs will handle the added lift and duration.
If you're interested in a lopey idle go with the smallest lobe seperation angle you can get. Try for 110 degrees. But first, as has been mentioned earlier, call Crane and get a list of cams they think will work best.
I have a 85 too. If you are going to do a cam, spend some more cash and do the heads at the same time. First I did a crane 2030, TPIS intake and TPIS headers and did not get a huge gain. Then I added Pro topline 180cc iron heads, that made a big difference. The stock 85 heads are junk. Sorry no dyno numbers. I also have FMS 19lbs injectors that are more like 22lbs GM injectors. Plan on getting a custom chip.
I wish I would have done the heads at the same time when I did the cam. The overall work would have been less.
With my package the 2030 is has to much power down low. On the street with a 3.74 rear end I have to lauch at idle and part throttle or I smoke the tires. Time for a SP and biger cam.
