transmission help
i have a 87 with a 4+3 and it works good in all the regular gears but when i go to put it in reverse it makes a grinding noise and the shifter vibrates. what is causing this to happen. and what should i do about it. is it ok to drive as long as i dont go in reverse.

Reverse gear does not have a synchronizer ring and if the input shaft to the transmission is turning or the countershaft is turning when you attempt to shift into reverse, it will grind because you are trying to engage two gears that are rotating. The gears must be stationary when trying to engage reverse for no grinding. Try this: push the clutch in while in any forward gear and the car stopped, then shift into reverse. If you get any gear clash (grinding) while shifting into reverse, then your clutch is not fully disengaging.
