Go buy a set of Pick tools...they come in handy for stuff like this. With the automatic shift ****,I too had a similar problem pulling out the metal clip holding it in and I used a pick tool that was bent a certain way to yank it out.
Snap on sells a great set of pick tools and the metal its made of is so tough its nearly impossible to bend or break it.
The only way I could get mine off was to drill a small hole for #6 or 8 sheet metal screw in the wedge. The hole needs to be small enough for the screw not to go all the way in and yet still stick up. Install screw tightly, then use the curved claw hammer with a small piece of sheet metal plate under the hammer and next to the screw--pry up and off it comes!
I used vice grips, & then a screw driver through them. Top out, stand in the middle of the car, foot on each side of the tunnel & pulled until it came out. Luckily it came out before I busted a nut... :-) You could prob. hammer up on the visegrips or screwdriver too.
Factory must really jam the mothers in as my car was never apart before I got it.
Lock the vise grips on the key, then slide a screwdriver through the grips. Hold the handle end of the screwdriver and put some upward force on it while tapping the other end of the screwdriver with a hammer. Think of it as a reverse impact.
The first one I tackled I did it this way and although it took about 5 minutes, it came out and didn't bean me in the head!
I couldn't get a pair of vice grips onto mine, so I took a screw driver, tapped it into the pin just barely and pryed upwards(small prybar would probably work better) until it came out real nicely, no forcing involved. Just make sure you protect the leather on the ****.
