Pull the wheel off and check the wheel bearing. It could also be that your brake pad is worn all the way down and you have metal grinding metal. If you have rusty dust or brake pad dust on your wheel it's probably the brakes.

Sounds like a rear wheel bearing. Jack up the rear of the car and grab the wheel at 12-6, if it moves, something is up with that bearing.
If its very bad, yes the wheel can fly off. I've seen it happen once.
I prefer AC Delco for bearings, but they run at about $225 each. Cheaper off-brands will come in around $150ish.

Pour some motor oil into an empty spray bottle. Lay on your back and squirt some motor oil onto the halfshaft u-joints on the side where the noise seems to come from. Or spray all 4 u-joints if you want. Drive the car. If the noise went away, it's the u-joints.

Generally they tend to go at the same time, bearings and joints. One wearing will wear the other.
If there is any clunking or banging going into gear, manual or auto, that would indicate a joint failure.
For that you want Spicer Cold Forged U-joints with NO zerk fitting, dont buy any other brand.
