GS vs Z06: Future project car?
That was one nice Z06.
BTW, he is asking $41K for an 8000 mile '96 GS, while I have looked at several '02 - '04 Z06s that have ranged from $25.9 - $34K (with mileage that ranged from 12K - 35K). Thoughts on GS vs Z06.
Oh btw AKS, I owe you a debt of gratitude. You inspired me to pull my head out of my butt and actually learn about tuning. I'm in my third month working at a local performance shop, and have learned a ton.
but the C5 ZO6 is a completely different animal, it is a corvette for sure, but just soooo different from the way the C4 feels. it is a better car hands down for performance as any track testing will tell you, but just a little different, I would love one, but you put my other dream car up against it and I couldn't go the ZO6 route..lol
just get both your childrens education isn't really that important anyways is it?
The real issue is that my wife has been on me for some time to buy a "decent car". Are you ready for this, my daily driver is a 97 Dodge (turned 9 in Sept '05) that was her leftover when she got the Toyota Sequoia in '02. I do have a couple of vettes ('87, '88, '89) and bikes ('03Gixxer 1K, '95ZX7R), but nothing really nice to drive as a DD. She has asked several times why I do not just buy a new C6, as she knows I really like them.
I am currently adding on to my garage (was 21.5' x 34') detached three car garage, and am now adding an additional 25' x 34' behind the original (basically double deep) plus a 1200 sq ft bonus area above. Based on that, I now will have more room for keeping the cars inside, as well as some new storage area.
I am just not quite sure I want to spend all of that cash on a new car. I have really gotten quite good at simply selling services or old parts to get whatever small parts I would like next for my older C4s.
Boy that '06 Z06 looked NICE!
having both a C4 and a Z06. the Z06 makes a great daily driver.
I have a buddy who had both the GS and the Z06. He sold me the Z06, I was aiming at the GS, but he is keeping it since it was his "first real car."
With the wife factor, and cost, the Z06 is awesome. So I would advise to take some time to play with one to help the decision.
Would you have planned to drive the GS on a daily basis? My concern is that I would like the next car to stay fairly stock (though I have looked at the TT kits for the C5s), and to use it a lot as a DD. What year is your Z06? Have you done any mods since purchase in light of it being a DD?
Thanks for all of the feedback,
Aaron

it'll be a monster.

my 90 has issues.
Mods on the Z06: pretty small
PIAA fog lights. (Z's dont have any)
Vararam intake
Working on a stereo system.
Added a HUD (01 Did not come with one)
Silvania silver star headlights 9005.
the car takes a 9006, but the tips are coated. the 9005 are not (so they are naturally brighter). the stock headlights on the Z are a joke. I had HID's but they fried.
Removed the spring on the back of the clutch. some sort of assist thing on it.
I am iching to get a shifter.
I think the stock shifter could of been better.
and I keep thinking about nitrous. but try not too. Thats probably where it will start, the modding spree.
If headers were legal for it here, I would have those on it too.
It came with HRE 19/20's, but I am running around on stock rims and tires right now, and I can feel it wind up more this way. those HRE's are kinda heavy.
I know how it feels to go to a C5 if you love the C4's. even when I first got the car I was feeling kinda like "whatever" after I got used to it (it feels big) I have not stopped smiling.
It goes fast (for stock)
It stops pretty good.
And it handles well.
And it is light.
Beats a GS in all these catagories.
My take on it. I dump the money into the C4, and enjoy the Z06 as is. It is not exactly slow. Just not stroked and blown fast.
And if you like AC, you will love the C5's blower fan power. My C4 sucks so bad I can remove it and not notice. the C5 can actually make me turn it down, and I can feel the air blowing on me.
My only complaints on the Z
The headlights suck
the shifter is so so. kinda notchy, ZF6 feels better.
and it is a bit loud inside at highway speed. they cut down the sound deadending material, and this is what you get.
One thing I did was buy a foam piece for the area under the rear window at ecklers. this cuts down the noise a lot.
I forgot to add. My Z06 is an 01. 385 hp. I drove a 02 around after having mine about 9 months. I really could not tell it had more power. but I still have the less HP complex.

Does $41K for an 8K mile convertable seem a bit steep? It did to me, but Doug seemed confident that he would have no issue selling for that price.
Aaron
Take a look at what they are listed at on the GS Registry. There are a couple of cars that are similar in mileage. Although one of them (convertible with 4500 miles) has been for sale ever since I've bought mine. That was 6.5 years ago.

Personally if it were me, I'd look at a car in the 50k mile range that had been taken care of well. They seem to be priced more reasonably in the mid 20's. I say reasonable because I don't think they will lose that much value if you begin driving it daily. The $40k cars will lose a lot of value just by changing the number on the odometer. In my opinion it shouldn't be that way, but it is. People care too much about miles and not enough about overall condition.
Another option is an LT4 regular production model. You can pick up a good low mile LT4 car for cheap these days. I think they're one of the best values in the C4 market right now.
Thanks for the detail. It seems that the GS convertible that I was looking at may be too much, and the Z is an awesome car (though somewhat bigger than the C4s).
Thanks,
Aaron
