I'm having trouble getting my ECM to communicate. I've tried several programs with no success, so I am getting down to basics.
The ECM is fine, Alvin plugged it into another car and it sung like a canary. However, it won't display any data for me and must be an issue with my diagnostic setup.
I've checked the wiring from the ALDL to the ECM and it's continuous. I've checked my serial port with hyperterminal and it works. But when I check communication at the ECM with hyperterminal I get nothing.
Has anyone had trouble with XP? I've disabled everything using the com port, as well as my wireless LAN card and infrared, still nothing.
The message datamaster gives is "ALDL working correctly but unsupported PCM type"
Are you using a usb to serial converter? I assume you're not, because you said you checked the serial port, but I have a converter and I'm seeing the same message.
Once I get the ECM back I'm going to tie directly into the wire from the module instead of going through the vehicle wiring. I should have had you send the cable you used to get communications when you tested it just to make sure my cable isn't somehow to blame.
Did you ship it already? If not, through in the cable. I'll either send money or ship it back within a day or two.
I also have a 93 [Auto, Coupe] and cannot read anything with the PC. I used WinAldl. I can short pins A & B and get the Service engine light to flash out codes and short pins A & G to get the speedo to flash. If you get it figured out I'll be happy to see how!

Have you tested the serial port on your laptop using Hyperterminal?

NO I did not. When the program starts it will give an error message if my cable is not installed in the com port. I made the cable myself, PNP transistor and (100 meg?) resistors.

I'll check the schematic on my cable. Just to be sure, start Hyperterminal (should be under Start, Accessories, Communications) and short pins 2 and 3 on your serial port together. Press any key on the keyboard and if you see the text then your port is transmitting and receiving data OK. I know it sounds unecessary, but I had a borrowed laptop that gave the same message (cable connections OK) but I checked and was not getting serial communication.
Also try downloading portmon from the net. It can monitor your port and make sure no other software is trying to access it.
I'm not sure how much more help I can give until I get mine working...
I'll keep posting here until I do, so keep an eye out.
aldl working but no pcm is detected that is the box that comes up for me with the datamaster 8d version and i got the cables from aldlcables.com and i have a newer laptop so i have the converter box (usb to serial) if anyone can help...........
I'm getting the "ALDL not detected" message now myself. Strange, until yesterday i got the message "ALDL detected but unsupported PCM type." I also have the cable from aldlcables.com, I wonder if there is some incompatibility issue with that cable. Seems unlikely, but I know my PCM is good, I've tried 3 laptops with several software packages, and everything else checks out. I think I'll try another cable just to see if I get lucky.
My other thought is that the CCM under the dash is somehow interfering and dragging the serial data line down. I'm going to try unplugging that module next. I don't have any other modules in the car.
