Default VATS Question on 85

My 85 has had a case of the temp "No Start" and one of the local Chev guys said it was most likely a VATS problem.

I thought that VATS started in 86,not 85.

If so on an 85,how is the best way to disconnect it to avoid this problem in the future? Will pulling the fuse do it ?

Thanks

If your car has VATS, there will be a magnetic pellet on your ignition key---should be real easy to tell. I don't think 85's came with VATS.

Yeah, my "91 craped out on me today for awhile at the tire shop getting my tire patched. Had to push start it.

No vats.

There is a theft deterrent module (TDM) though, which opens a starter interrupt relay if the alarm is tripped.

The clutch pedal switch is in series with this circuit to the starter also.

There is no fuse for the TDM, you'll have to reach under the passenger side footwell up behind the ecm and disconnect it. It's the wide plug with about 15 wires coming out and is at a 45 degree angle.

If it is the built in factory alarm (not what is normally meant by Vats - as stated above, not on an '85) then the reset proceedure is to: turn off the ignition then unlock a door from the outside with the key. That's it - just lock and inlock an outside door - either one will do, but try both as the switch on the lock tumbler can go bad. Unlocking either of the doors like that disarms and resets the alarm (assuming that It's working OK) and will close the starter interrupt relay.
