Default Car Overheats Blows Cold Air?

Hi.....I have my 94 vert and 96 coupe parked for the winter and I am using my daily beater now for the winter up here.....it's a 89 golf...in the summer I replaced the entire cooling system (and drove it no problems for 4 months)...new rad,new hoses, new stat, and new gaskets....even a thorough radiator flush....I drove it two days ago with no issues at all. The temp outside went to -20c overnight...I jumped in it tonight and she starts fine and all but the temp light started to flash so I topped of the coolant and let her idle for 10-15 minutes.....it still ran fine when I notice the temp gauge maxing out....and no red indicator light came on? During this period of idling I noticed no Heat...no WARM air blow at all...just cold. What could it be? Thanks....I know i'ts not a vette but I am confused...And yes she did over heat where the resevoir cap was actually whistling...Thanks...HOOBS

Have you checked the heater core and the related hoses/connections going to it?

That's what I was thinking...could they be air locked or clogged up?

Yes I have seen that before and I would check for leaks also maybe get the system pressure tested.

It ain't going to blow cold air if the stat is stuck shut. You are low on coolant or your heater core is plugged up.

What is the first thing you'd check? You weren't real specific.

Well I finally got around to fixing it last night...Our outside temp here last night hit at -36 with the windchill...so I put the car in the garage to un thaw and here's what I noticed...It had been sitting in the garage over night and in the morning I grabbed one of the heater hoses and it felt slushy. So...I figured I messed up with the mixture of antifreeze. I went out last night and drained the entire colling system in my garage and man it looked like black water....I drained her out...blew out the hoses and put in a new pre-mixed mixture of coolant, hooked everything back up...took her for a good spin and ureka hot air! I figure what happend was one line from the heater core was frozen and didn't allow proper circulation throughout...but it finally is cured...Thanks for all your tips! we hit -37 here last night...BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Hoobs. Not from around here, are you?

I'd have to think that although you wrote earlier about
performing a thorough flush, the heater control valve must
have been closed. None of the fresh coolant would have
been able to circulate into it.

What is the history on the car? If you drained 'black
water' out of the cooling system, it can't have been well
maintained.

If coolant DID freeze in the heater core, then you are lucky
there are no leaks.

Is this your driver or is someone else going to be using it?
I would be careful, especially if it is a car for a non-car
person like the wife, daughter or GF. Last time I was there,
Medicine Hat was surrounded by a WHOLE lot of nothing. I
would NOT want to be stranded outside of the city. Pack a
cell phone, blankets, candles & ect. if you are taking it
on a trip.

By the way - those 'Vettes. Did you use a hydrometer to
make sure the coolant mix is sufficient down to say -40ºF
or colder?

Shouldn't this be posted in the Tech forum?

Yep, but the Mods haven't figured out a way to move it over
to the water-cooled VW board.

Kidding aside, some folks were able to help and hopefully he
dodged bursting the heater core (or anything else.)

The mods could move it to Tech or off topic where I think it
would land chronologically instead of rising once again to the
top.

Or, if we just leave it with out posting further it will sink into
the archives without further ado.
