Default Quick timing mark question -

When the #1 cylinder is in the firing postion the timing marks on both timing gears should both be at 12 o'clock right?

Then when the engine is turned one complete revolution and the timing mark on the balancer comes up again the mark on the crank gear will be back at 12 o'clock and the mark on the cam gear will be at 6 o'clock right?

I don't have the manual in front of me and I really want to get this thing back together tonight.

Thanks,

Brian

yep, when number one is at TDC both dots at 12. If the heads are on look at the valves number one should be closed
When the cam is at 6 and the crank is at 12, number 6 cylinder is at top (w/valves closed)

Great thanks for the quick reply!

I suppose I should also check one more thing -

If I remember correctly, the valves should not be moving as the #1 cylinder comes up to fire right? If they do than that is #6 firing and you need to go around one more time?

thanks again,

Brian

when #1 is coming up to tdc to fire, both valves should be closed. this is the compression stroke.

The valves shouldn't be moving at TDC after the compression stroke, but that isn't a good time to lash them.

With the crank sprocket timing mark at 12:00 o'clock, the pistons for both #1 and #6 are at TDC.

With the above and the cam sprocket dot at 12:00 o'clock, the engine is at the end of the compression stroke for the #1 cylinder.

With the above and the cam sprocket dot at 6:00 o'clock, the engine is at the end of the compression stroke for the #6 cylinder.
