Helping a friend with his 94 lt1. In short it has 120,000 miles but runs great just replaced opti, cap, rotor, wires but still has a intermittent pop through intake. Posiiable problem with mass air flow sensor???
I had the same issue with my 95. The car would backfire through the intake when I was half way on the throttle, ONLY when the car was cold. When the car warmed up the backfiring went away, but the car still felt like it had a miss. I replaced all wires, OPTI and plugs were less than a few thousand miles old, the problem remained. A week later, I disconnected the mass air connector and the car ran great, cold/warmed up. Turned out the MAF was not reading the air properly, I ran TTS and noticed, crusing on the highway, the MAF values were all over the place, but did not trigger a fault code.
Disconnect the mass air flow sensor, first thing before you drive the car that day. If the car rides great with the mass air disconnected, then there is a high probability it's the mass air flow sensor. The map sensor will compensate for the disconnected MAF. However, the pcm will not be optimized, but it will allow you to drive the car until the MAF is replaced.
