Grounded (or opened) bypass wire would be a cause of the 42. It's tan/black (mine's mostly tan these days) from terminal C at the 4 way connector at the Distributor to the barrel connector near the battery (you disconnect it to set timing) to Pin D5 at the ECM. You might also want to make sure the plastic barrel connector is in good shape - along with the wire. I usually end up forgetting that the Code is in History after a smog check - The tech will check timing and fail to clear the code and then I'll be scanning it for some other obscure problem and it'll pop up.

Sorry. I still don't understand. I figured y'all were talking about the catalytic converter, but you are saying "Pre" cat. I don't have a clue.

Pre- cats are pre-catalytic converters. There are two of them. One coming off of each header prior to the catalytic converter. Either pop your hood and follow pas the headers, or look up from underneith to find them.
