I have been doing some clean up on my '85. When I removed the console trim and the shifter boot (it's a manual trans 4+3), I found a cable that was not connected under the boot. It is supposed to fit over a post and be held in place with a clip of some kind. My guess is that it is for the cruise control but I am not sure. I looked in all of my manuals and I can't find anything about it.
Is it related to the cruise control? I haven't owned the car that long. Is there any reason why someone would disconnect it? Or maybe the clip just came off.

It is a Morse type cable? Like used for the shift linkage for an auto trans? Or a throttle cable? If so, that is the "park lock cable". It makes it necessary to have the trans is some certain gear (reverse?) before you can lock the ignition and the steering wheel. It also prevents the shift stick from moving until the ignition switch is unlocked. It is a theft deterrent device.

The same item prevents the shifter from being removed from "PARK" on a car with an auto trans, until the key is turned out of the "LOCK" position. The other end goes up into the steering column.
Thanks for telling me what it is. It was disconnected when I bought it. Is there are reason that I should reconnect it, other than the anti-theft function? I kinda like not having to to put it in a specific gear to remove the key.

I have always parked a stick shift car in reverse, being the lowest ratio, it best resists the car rolling. It is a pretty good safety feature. It instills the discipline to park in the correct gear, and prevents the neighborhood kid (or worse) from slipping it into neutral and rolling it away. Suit yourself.
