When cold, my 1990 auto has trouble going into OD when first
shifting out of park. I can put it into D or D1 to quicken this
process. I don't know when this has been serviced last and
this car does have lots of miles. Any opinions as to what may be wrong. The fluid is at normal level and still looks red.
I know that the torque converter doesn't lock up until a certain coolant temp is reached( I believe around 130 degrees). While driving like this it might feel like it hasn't shifted to overdrive but it's just the unlocked converter.
Do you mean it is not shifting into gear? First thing id do is drop the pan, new gasket/fluid/filter, and see what's in the bottom of the pan, as well as cut open the filter and see how it looks. You could have some blockages in the valve body.....
The pic below is what mine looked like after i got my car....
The car has to be a certain temp to go into OD, also low fluid will cause this problems. The govenor could be going south.
Give us some more info, does this happen all the time or only after it is first started, what does your DIGITAL temp guage read, is your fluid level correct and is it only from 3rd to 4th or does it happen in other gears.
Im still waiting to hear EXACTLY what his problem is, but he says...

which would lead me to believe he is talking about shifting FROM PARK and into OD in order to make the car go forwards. The car WILL shift into 4th gear at ANY temp, and 4th gear is called overdrive. All the ones ive driven do. The converter wont lock its clutch til a certain temp is reached as stated by GlennS87.
