Thanks, I have ordered a new adapter. I know a lot of people at dealerships and none of them can find their tech1 adapter (only one could even find their old tech 1 at all).
The operators manual for the Tech1A says that all that's needed is the application cartridge in the bottom slot, the DLC cable plugged in to the unit with the power cord to the cigar lighter and the GM 12/14 pin adapter. I can send you and MDI file of the page if you send and email address.
If you will notice on the adapter page, you need Adapter "E" for 86 - 89 "y" and "f" body 5.0 and 5.7 liter cars. It also says this in a GM service bulletin. Plus I have tried with and without the adapter...any help would be appreciated!
Here is the GM bulletin:
No Serial Data Communications Using Tech 1 with a 1986 or Newer Camaro , Firebird , or Corvette with 5.0 , 5.7 Engine - kw body CCM crank display DTC EBTCM ECM electrical fuse ground HVAC ignition #PI01697 - (Jan 30, 2004)
No Serial Data Communications Using the Tech 1 with a 1986 or Newer Camaro, Firebird or Corvette with a 5.0 or 5.7 litre engine
.
When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.
Condition/Concern:
There have been numerous questions regarding serial data communications with certain vehicles. These vehicles require an adapter between the Tech 1 and the Assembly Line Data Link (ALDL). For all 1986 model year and newer Camaros, Firebirds and Corvettes with either the 5.0 or 5.7 litre engines, it is mandatory that an adapter between the Tech 1 and the ALDL be used in order to communicate with certain modules. The part number for the adapter is TA02149 and is called a GM PIN E adapter. Concerns which encompass no communication with the ECM or the CCM will be corrected with the use of this adapter.
Recommendation/Instructions:
Use this adapter between the Tech 1 and the vehicle ALDL to communicate with the serial data line.
.
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
Models:
(1986 - 1996 Pontiac Firebird w/5.0 or 5.7 litre engine) and (1986 - 1996 Chevrolet Camaro w/5.0 or 5.7 litre engine) and (1986 - 1996 Chevrolet Corvette )
I'm now informed. I only connect to a 95 A4 with a special adapter, the only reason I bought the Tech1. Hadn't tried to connect to my OBD2 cars with it. Use a Snap-On unit for those. It appears that you have an issue before the connection.

Problem solved. I received my NEW MASS STORAGE CARTRIDGE in the mail yesterday which was the same programming my old cartridge was but when I changed out the cartridge..the TECH1 WORKED! I guess I had a cartridge go bad. never seen that. But I DID have to use the adapter! Just wanted to thank all those that helped!
