I recently took my 94 to get its inspection sticker. Well, it didn't pass. I have to admit that this is a 3rd driver and as such is not a daily driver. In fact I have driven it a total of 322 miles in the last year. I had no idea that lack of driving would cause such problems. Well, when I had it inspected last Dec. it passed everything with flying colors. This time it failed big time. Now I'm not sure if this would have anything to do with it but I did replace the battery a month ago. I told the guy who did the inspecting about the lack of miles and he said that was probably it. Well, me in all my wisdom decided I would try to put a couple hundred miles on it and then take it back in to get it inspected. Well, after driving it a little bit more it is running great. No hesitation whatsoever. But on the bad side, I was doing a little spirited driving and I'll be damn if there wasn't a little smoke coming out from behind the back of the motor. I pulled the Fuel rail covers off and it appears to be a gasket leak. How hard is it to change this? Any help will be greatly appreciated especially since I am going to try and fix this myself. And while I'm doing this is there anything I should do while I'm at it like upgrade the RR's?
Yeah I know, before it gets said. I should have been driving it more. And the other thing I learned is to not let work get in the way of driving like it has been. Any way, I think I have been kicking myself in the butt ever since I found it smoking this morning. I should have been rotating back and forth between my 94 and 2000. Is it possible I caused the problem with the gasket by getting on it pretty hard?
1) rear intake manifold seal, as you mentioned.
2) oil pressure sending unit.
my '95 did the same thing, and it turned out to be a leaky Oil pressure switch. Check this first. It is located behind and below your EGR valve. These suckers are notorious for leaking....You might get lucky and not even have to do your intake manifold gaskets.....I've done this job too, not hard but takes the better part of a weekend.
Thanks for the advice. I will definitely look into the leaky oil pressure switch. The funny thing, if you can cll it funny, is that when I first starting getting on it pretty good there was some smoke out the back. I kept doing this in increments and finally it stopped smoking altogether out the back and it is running really good now except for the smoke coming from the back of the intake area. Well, I am not too upset. It will give me a chance to learn more about this car. I think I will play it out of proportion and make a mountain out of a mole hill and get the wife to buy me some goodies. Maybe I can swing some headers or a new exhaust out of this. Anyway, thanks for the great advice.
