not sure if this belongs in C4 general or not but does anybody have any experience with carbonfiber driveshafts? do they make them for our cars? the guy on ws6.com makes them sound pretty nice. how much do they cost? i bet they would save a lot of weight in rotating mass which means a lot faster revving!

They make them for sure but have you ever looked to see how short your driveshaft actually is? They are very short and already very light. You could save a tiny bit of weight but overall it only offers a very small performance gain.

i have seen my driveshaft and i do realize it is very short. im assuming the Fbody guys get a lot more gain out of them because they have longer DS to begin with. just curious if anybody had any experience with them either on another car or a vett

The real benefit of a CF driveshaft is strength, not weight savings. I've seen a couple in person and they weigh pretty much the exact same as the stock shaft. The ones I saw where aluminum shafts wrapped in carbon fiber. There might be other ones out there, but I really can't imagine them saving much weight overall.

They do not give you a performance gain. The mass is rather close to the stock mass, and the actual radial size is too, actually the only ones I have measurements for place the rotational inertia as being higher than the original piece. Thus, no gain and actually an incremental loss (nothing you would ever notice or see on a dyno, however). Same goes for the halfshafts.

Their #1 benefit is their superior strength, and that isnt exactly needed for the driveshaft, but the halfshaft instead.

so i assume that if you had the money you could get ur driveshaft AND halfshafts made from carbon fiber? im guessing you would only need this if you were running in the tens?

There was a post a few weeks ago about carbon fiber half-shafts...I forget who created it, it should come up if the search is working. Anyway, they were supposed to be rated for a lot of power...but that just means something else in the rear-end will break before they do!
