Default Buying 383 long block

I have a 90 couupe L98 and I am going to buy a 383 long block. What will I need to get this running? Will I need a new chip I plan on using the TPI set up until I can raise funds to do better. The engine is 9:5.1 compression with 2.02 intake and 1.6 exhaust.

It all depends on what cam is in the 383. If it was stock L98 cam, then you will not need a chip. but I doubt anyone would put a stcok CAM in, after spending the extra to make a 383. Is it a roller CAM (you better hope so)? With the stock intake and stock injectors and stock exhaust the extra of the 383 will be stifled. First it will not get enough air or gas to see performance gains over stock. Then it can not push the exhaust out well enough either. For example with my 1990 stock chip, it would start and run my new ZZ4 motor with SuperRam and Headers and larger injectors and TB. But the combo really came alive with the custom mail order chip. I have been told that I will see substantial gains if i was to get a chip made while my car is on the DYNO. Our 1990 cars have MAP not MAF. They are real sensitive to changes (like CAM/timing changes), that the MAF cars are not as bad. The advice I was given was when I was changing engines, was to start it up with the stock chip see what it does and then get a new chip. My chip from Fomato in Florida was $500. A dyno tuned chip in the DC area supposedly will cost around $1000 and up.

I could never imagine putting that kind of money into something, and then not trying to take advantage of it by spending another $500 to get it right. The $500 would include the cost to pay someone to tune it, and about 3 hours on a chasis dyno.

I am planning on a Dyno Tune and headers right away but want to wait on mini ram. I live in south Florida Miami area does anyone know of a good dyno tune shop here. Since there are no epa inspections I am going to make it true dual exhaust without Cat. What trouble will I run into?

You could try Breathless, but I wouldn't trust them. If I were you I would call Next Level Performance (Mike Norris) at 407-869-7223 and schedule an appt with them. They are in Orlando.

They use Jim Smith when tuning C4's, and there aren't too many that are better than him. They charge $500 for this and will spend all day getting it right if they have to.

Good luck with it...

Thanks for the input on Dyno tune. I have to look at options for a roller cam. In the future I will be going to mini-ram and I will be putting headers on. Long Tube or Shorties? What Cam?

I have a friend with a 90 that he recently stroked to a 383. He had TPIS build the motor and do the tuning. Now this is a road race car and is no longer street legal but he did the following:

383
TPIS headers, X-Pipe, no cats, no mufflers
Mini Ram
TPIS ZZX cam
58 MM TB
McLeod Street Twin
a few other assorted bolt ons

This car put down over 500 on the engine dyno and I believe around 425 to the rear wheel. It is an absolute beast and pulls like a freight train (also weighs about 2900 lbs).

Not sure how streetable that combination would be, but I can guarantee it would be quick.
