I found this thing laying near the passenger side exhaust manifold. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Wouldn't that be the connector and top portion off of the knock sensor on the passenger side of the block?

OK, what's my prize?

God, I hope not, is it? where is the knock sensor, screwed into the water jacket near the bottom of the block like on marine engines?

OK I found it....the one on the other side just has a spade connector. If I buy a new one will it come like that with a spade connector and then I can cut off the end of this wire and put on a new connector?

On an '86, the knock sensor is located on the passenger side just a bit above the pan rail in the coolant jacket. The ceramic part that you are seeing attached to the connector can come loose from the main body. I do not believe that the sensor actually backed out. Just replace the sensor and be back up and running.

One word of caution, have the new sensor ready to install when you pull the broken sensor, as the complete coolant system will try to dump. Hold finger over hole when removed, then quickly insert new sensor. Invariably, you will have to add some coolant to the system.

Just one knock sensor, and it has a single lug sticking through the middle of a round ceramic plug in '86. I am not sure what you may have found on the drivers side (oil temp sensor)?

Ugh...okay this is getting a little more complicated. I went and looked where Aaron suggested, and where I am used to finding knock sensors. That seems to be disconnected too. In the picture below, that will be the one on the left. The original one I found is on the right in the picture. That one seems like it should go to some sensor that is in the side of the cylinder head; there is another one on the other side of the car that is hooked up OK. Now might be a good time to mention that this car was repowered with a ZZ4 (not by me)

AAAHHHH the 2 you show are fan and water temp.
Knock sensor will only be visible by getting under it , it will be visible but should have a metal shroud covering it . It will be above and between the starter area on the block.
The descripition could be better ?? If it is drivers side ,look above the oil pump for something misssing, do you have a you have a HSM

Since most SBCs have similar sensor holes, the location of each sensor SHOULD be dictated by the CAR wiring, rather than the exact engine used. In 1986 the right side cylinder head carried the dash gauge water temperature sending unit, between the #6 and the #8 spark plugs. The corresponding hole (the heads are the same, left and right) on the other side of the car, falls between the #1 and the #3 plugs, and holds the auxiliary fan switch. These functions are easy enough to confirm by simply grounding the wire to each and observing the two subject components.

Thank you. I will check this out. I must admit that I have not gotten around to ordering a HSM yet. I have only had the car for a couple of months. I found the knock sensor and rehooked it back up. It still seemed a little hinky at the connector so I put a dab of silicone to keep it from popping back off. I think it must have been on before I got my hands in there else I would have been getting a code?

Back to the water temp sensors. This car is an 85 but I cant imagine the wiring being any different from an 86. I get good water temp readings at the dash (Lo-190~), but it is the right side one that is unhooked. I should think that fan is coming on too else I would be running a lot hotter, but....back out to the garage to poke around some more. At least I am armed with a clue....(I know I need to get a HSM, but I really need to get a steering rack first, it leaks like a seive)

Actually, its been running fine. Seems a little rich (black at the back of the car). No codes with stock or performance chips that came with it. Temp is fine, plenty of power, no problem hitting about 65 MPH in second gear(4500 RPM) Once in a while it has trouble holding an idle (after restarting when hot?) but not often.

There are some big vacum lines disconnected up at all the coffee can at the drivers front fender, but I was saving that for another thread since they dont seem to be leaking any vacuum nor affecting anything. Actually I was thinking about taking the whole mess out, but as I said, thats another thread

Well start imagining. The gauge temp sender and the axillary fan switches swapped locations from 1985 to 1986. I'm not sure where I got the impression that your car was an '86. The main fan is ECM controlled and would not be affected by either component. The ECM gets IT'S info from the sensor in the front of the intake manifold, next to the 9th injector switch. As a test, ground that wire, with the ignition on and see if the aux fan doesn't start spinning. Then order a FSM.

RACE ON!!!

OK, I got it. CFI-EFI is right, although for whatever reason it is reversed on my car. Grounding the drivers side wire (which was hooked up OK) yields a 299 degree reading on the dash. Grounding the passenger side wire !! Turns on the fan!! I guess I have been running without a fan. Pretty weird, you think it would have been running hot like that.

Thanks CFI!

Uh-oh, I spoke too soon, which one is the main fan? The one on the rear of the radiator is the one that came on. There is also one on the front of the radiator but it is unhooked. There are wires running over to it that have been spliced into the wiring for the rear fan, but as I said its unhooked. I didnt give this too much thought as the guy that I got the car from said that that fan had been added when he had the engine put in.

and I tended to believe this, because its physical mounting leaves much to be desired..
