$17.95 Brake Pads
I always see posting's that front brake pads cost $50.00. When I went to Auto Zone to buy some for our "84" they had pads for $17.95 and $50.00. They could not explain to me the difference in the two. Is there a "valid" technical reason to spend the extra $30+ dollars.
Perhaps I just cheap because, I also put a water pump in the "87" a while back for $30.00 and a starter in the "84" for $30.00 both priced $100+ less then the high price units I hear others are putting in and they appear to work just fine. I can understand paying more for pads if one squeaks and one doesn't or if the mileage out of one is 2-4 times greater. I appreciate your comments before I go out tommorrow to buy them. Thanks for the input...

Re: $17.95 Brake Pads (87-2NV)
I used Discount Auto Parts Rotors and Lifetime Pads for my 84. The pads were 19.95 for the fronts and 19.95 for the rears. New front rotors were 24.95 each. Their expensive water pump was 44.00 new. It was identical to the GM pump I pulled off. The rebuilt starter was only 36.00.
I haven't had any problems with any of the parts. Keep in mind that these parts were used on many other GM vehicles including trucks. That makes the prices very competative. Thats why I consider my corvette and economy car. I have less than 11,000.00 in it. I've put over 20,000 miles one it already and everything on the car works perfectly.
I also replaced my ac compresser. Only 85.00. At the time I converted it to R134A the new reciever dryer cost 95.00.
By far the best investment so far was a 25.00 roller timing chain. With 110,000 miles on the car I could touch the two sides of the original chain together. The car runs like a tiger now.

well the $50 pad fm autozone is the pfz coarbon metalic spec pads and the $18 special ? The only reason I opted for the $50 pad was because I knew for a fact that the stock pads faded early and tried these previously on my stang w/ pretty noticable diff no fade..........and you cant put a price on safety, anybody can go fast ...................... :smash: :chevy :seeya

I don't know about you guys, but it cost me $100 just for the Raybesto front pads from Pep Boys. All I needed were the 4 clips so I just returned the damn things without the clips. Its $150 for the pads from a dealer!!!!

Did my fronts two weeks ago. Got the Raybestos prostop pads at Pep Boys for $21.99. Put over 300 miles on them since and no problems. My total cost for the job, including a 9" C-clamp was $38.23. I'm happy with the outcome.

I used the cheap pads also. I did upgrade to the DRM brake bias spring...it made a world of difference itself, so I don't know if the pads suck or not because now the brakes are 100% better in my opinion.

I can...I went to Pep boys. I bought a accumulator for $65, a generic GM conversion fitting set ( $20? ) A slew of 'O' rings to replace all mine, some ether AC oil and two cans of R134a. Total cost was about $100-$110.
