What the pricey perf mufflers do is to sound nice AND reduce ressonance at low rpm/throttle. The more "flow through" a muffler is..the less it is likely to filter out the bad sounds.
I am currently using the hooker aero-chamber mufflers for the C4 vette. It is a good product at a good price, But I sware I actually thought they were louder tham the temp straight pipes I had on there before. Resonnace is also in full swing with these (headers plus no cats)
This very question is why you go to car shows, so you can hear and find what you want.

It's always better to hear somebody's car in person if possible. What one individual might consider to sound "good" or "loud" might not be the same for another guy.

Well...None, quite frankly is the "meanest" sounding! But, I have to agree with ZD1: the Hooker Aero-Chambers are the most evil sounding muff's besides race bullets or open exhaust. They're a straight-through design and if you have a built car they sound wicked! The last full exhaust system I had on my car was a full-mandrel bent 3" system with the Aero-Chambers. My 396 sounded like a USAC Sprint car at WFO and I got more compliments from the sound of that car than I did the way it ran. Now, beware however, that they are LOUD!!! Particularly if you're like me and had a high-compression stroker with a rowdy solid-roller and 1 7/8" primary headers and no cats... LOUD!!! But, I have put them on an '88 convertible with a stock exhaust; we just replace muffs with the Hookers. They weren't bad then except for the typical resonance you get with a 'vert; they had a very deep tone at idle and part throttle.

I have Hooker 2149 headers, no cats, 2.5 " dual exhaust and Flowmaster 40 series mufflers.
Quality ain't the best transferring from old school cam to digital format, but turn up the speakers. The first vid you can hear 4th gear rubber from almost 1/4 mile away. The second video is two burnouts.
THANKS FOR THE INFO, BY THE WAY I THINK I MIGHT TRY THE AERO CHAMBER MUFFLERS. I HAVE A BUILT MOTOR IN MY 85 CORVETTE IT, HAS HEADERS AND NO CATS, SO IT MABEY IT WILL SOUND PRETTY COOL.
