Re: What happens when your timing chain breaks? (L98Terror)
Man... that is one sad picture. I am assuming since you didn't show the tops of the pistons that none of them were damaged or you just haven't gotten that far into it yet?
Re: What happens when your timing chain breaks? (Oly)
Just wondering, how many miles on the chain? Was it stock or aftermarket? What were you doing when it let go? No matter what cauesd it, thats some sad looking valves.

Excuse me while I go outside and :U
Well I didn't have the Dig camerma when the engine was apart for this. This will make you laugh  A couple pistons had in dentations and brurs. So I took my die grinder and smoothed them out and figured it would get me through the summer. Well that was 2 summers ago. Last week I ran a 12.1 in thw 1/4 guess it didn't hurt to much. Everyone thought I was crazy for not changing out the piston(including me)
Re: What happens when your timing chain breaks? (L98Terror)
Been there! Done that! But my chain didn't break, it just stretched and then slipped a few teeth. I had a bunch of bent valves (7 exhaust valves) and some small dents in my forged pistons. My machine shop did the same thing, cleaned up the pistons and then rebuilt the rest of the motor. It was a mild rebuild, but still ran a very traction limited 13.7 @ 100 in my otherwise stock '85.
here is how my pistons looked:
and the rockers where the bent valves were:
and the timing gear with some missing teeth:
a thousand bucks and a bunch of work later and I fixed that $25 timing chain set!!!!
Re: What happens when your timing chain breaks? (L98Terror)
Were you running the stock 'nylon' cam gear?? They aren't recommended for any reliable hi-perf use. I run the iron gear...a little noisier but well worth it.
