i have an 85 corvette, sometimes the brakes will just go to the floor and then since i have a mild cam in my car it's starts pulling through, this really sucks when your stopped on a hill and someones in front of you because i basically have no brakes. the weird thing is it only happens periodically, i checked for leaks, bled the breaks and booster and master cylinder are fairly new. if some one has an idea please respond!

Had my '88 for just over 6 months, now and I just got the same problem resolved about a week ago. My Master Cylinder went out. I changed the Master Cylinder, and bled the brakes until the cows came home. I also have new calipers, pads and rotors in the front. They helped a bit, too =) But the problem (just like you) is that I hit the brakes and they go to the floor. Sometimes, I could take my foot off of the brake and pound it really fast to bring some tension back to it and stop me But that's just me =)
You either have air in the hydraulic brake system or your master cylinder is failing. Here is a hint for you in bleeding the brakes........place a block of wood under the brake pedal such that the pedal is not allowed to go the the floor. You should use only 1/2 of the pedal travel to bleed the brakes. Why? Because the lower 50% of the pedal travel is not used (parts not worn in) and you can create a master cylinder failure by bleeding the brakes using the full pedal travel. My experience...and opinion....others can differ without causing me heartburn! I would remove the master cylinder, bench bleed it and then bleed each wheel per the Helms manual sequence. If this does not work, you are looking at a new master cylinder! Don't screw around with this problem too long without getting someone to look at it for you. If the brakes fail at a "bad time", you could be in real trouble. Good luck!
