Default speedometer problem

After the car warms up, while sitting at idle, the speedo does not stay at 0 mph. It jumps around 6,4,11,0,2 . It seems to be random numbers.
Does anyone know how to fix this ? It is a 96 LT4.

Thanks

I have the same problem on my 84 - I think it will probably be an electical connector problem. I recently found that the pins on my ECM were corroded enough to sever the connection under certain, intermittent conditions. I have every intention of cleaning the leads to my speedo to see if that will solve the problem (this includes the VSS and several connectors behind the dash).

It could be the tach filter (located in the distributor in mine, not sure about yours), but who knows for sure. However in my situation I'm pretty sure it's a connector issue because the ECM sees a constant "0" speed at idle and the correct value at low speeds - even though my speedo will jump around at the same time. So not sure what else it could be. I'll have to check the wiring diagrams, but I think the VSS goes to the ECM and THEN to the dash (accounting for the discrepancy if the problem is between the ECM and the dash wiring), but not sure.
