Default Cat placement discussion

I had nothing to do the other night and I started thinking about where to put CATs on my EM header install project. Here is the question:

How far back can you put the cats on a 92-96 exhaust system and still be effective in their operation? Is there a magic formula?

Now, I know I can just put them on the end of the collector and be done with it, but I just want to know if they can be installed further back. Any exhaust gurus out there? Let the learning begin.....

I have to install mine also so I hope we get an answer. Merle from EM told me for an auto a pipe has to go onto the collector till you get past the tranny.

Just curious Tom, since you have a six speed why you don't want to put them next to the tranny where there's plenty of room? And fredk, Stainless Works has a header and cat set-up for the automatics that allows cat placement next to the trans.

Do a search on Tom "tjwong" Wong's exhaust. Tom instsalled the cats further back. I slip fit mine to the header collectors.

From what I've read, the government regulates the placement of teh cats and to putthem anywhere else other than the stock location is illegal.
I've never heard of anyone being busted for this and I know plenty of folks who have either removed them or placed themelsewhere and haven't had a problem, but I don't know how many live in a non emmissions checking state.

The farther the cats are from the engine, the longer it takes for them to reach operating temperature and become effective. If the car is used primarily for the street and you care about emissions and our car hobby, the goal should be to place them as close as possible to the engine. IMO, street cars should be kept as "legal" as possible so that the anti-car ***** dont try to find an excuse to kill our hobby. Keep the cats (upgradge to high flow cats if necessary), and place them as close to the engine as possible.
