Default instrument cluster problem

having my instrument cluster goes intermittent for 30-45 seconds and then works normal, when intermittent it goes int a lost in space kinda mode the whole cluster segments and flashes weirdly any ideas / stuck scratching my head, this is an 86 and this is not a back lighting issue it effects the whole cluster speedo, tach, fuel ,cooling everything they all flash/pulse irregularly like i said something from lost in space is the best way to describe it,and just how critical is battery voltage can a bad cell effect this with just slightly less than 12 volts

You must take it apart and clean the pins that connect the boards together.

Good luck.

Here is a solution for one problem clusters have, when the backlight lamps are intermittent. The cluster has two circuit boards that plug together with a single row of pins on the front board to a socket on the rear board. The end pin closest to the center of the board carries the lamp current. An age relaxed spring on the socket causes connection resistance and the lamp current through this resistance causes enough heat to unsolder the pin. Resoldering the pin will not cure this problem. I fixed my 87 by soldering a short piece of insulated hookup wire from the pin to the socket and have had no trouble since.
