I just Changed the Gear in my 1988 w/Dana 44 (3.07 to 3.45). I checked my Haynes/Chiltons and all I could find was the weight it uses(80W90), but not how many ounces it takes to fill it. I just hate (really, really dislike) leaving in the middle of a project, just to get more stuff, if I didn't get enough on the first trip. Gas ain't cheap now a days to go back and forth to the parts store.
My factory service manual says my diff holds approx 4 pints. You can check your's to see if it is different. It would be no less than whatever you drained out of it. I would think if you had 5 pints on hand, that you'd be fine.
RACE ON!!!
PS. Don't forget the two bottles of GM friction modifier.

Capacity is 1.5qts. I just had another set of gears put in the pumpkin of mine and I filled it with fluid Thursday night. A differential that has residual fluid left in it will take ~1.25 qts, or 5 pts as CFI mentioned.
Buy 2 qts of lube and fill until it dribbles out the fill hole (btw, put the friction modifier in first). Make sure the car is level while you're filling it.
Lastly....ditch the Haynes and buy a real service manual. It's money well spent if you intend to do your own work.
Make sure you put the 2 containers of posi additive in first before you refill with the rest of your fluid....Also take a look at the RED LINE rear fluid as it also has additional posi additives which will help and it's synthetic which keeps the tepm down..
(2) 4 oz. bottles of GM Differential additive. Then I filled the rest up to the fill plug with 80/90. Be sure to buy a fluid transfer pump. Saves alot of time and well worth the money.
Would the dana 36 have the same fluid requirements ? My helm's manual says 4 ounces of posi additive. I plan on draining (with fluid pump) and refilling.
