Default Checking total timing

What is the best way to check total timing? I have moved base timing everywhere from 6 to 12 BTDC. Runs much better at 12 than it does at 6. No detonation even at 12? I want to see how much total timing its getting. How much total should it have? I have this hypertech chip. Does the chip control total timing? I am not happy with the way its running still. Just trying to eleminate some things.

An AutoXRay of other scan tool is the ultimate in reading timing and much more.

hey paul....you still got the sticker on the side of your radiator that shows all the timing stuff??? on my '85, i had to disable the esc (electronic spark control) this was a fusible link located by the vacuum booster (mine was brown with black stripe) also make sure you have no advance settings on your timing light like i did.....turned out i couldn't even see the timing mark because of my timing light! i also hear that these cars run best at 4* BTDC....i think mine idles too rough at that, so i put it back to 6* oh yeah.....the sticker also said to time while its in drive cuz its an automatic.
have i helped? or are you thoroughly confused?
