The ACCEL HEI Super Coil comes with this big, ugly, grey plastic cover over the actual coil. Installing it with that cover in place prevents installing the aluminum plenum extension.
Kinda ugly when done that way.
Has anyone removed thatlastic cover, then installed just the ACCEL HEI Super coil and then used the original HEI coil cover?
That would allow the plenum extension to be screwed back in place.
My first thought was that the plastic cover was there to aid in heat dissapation, but looking at it more closely makes me think it's just an advertising gimmick that has no real utility.
Accel makes the same coil but without the ugly plastic. It is a direct bolt in and fits the oem cap and cover perfectly. I do not have the part number, but it is in Accel's catalog. $55 if I remember correctly.

Thanks, Pete. Problem is none of the auto parts stores in my area had one; they only had the coils with the red and white wires and I need red and yellow, so I bought this ugly ( at least to me) sucka.
Unless there is a downside, I'm going to bust the cover off. I see no screws holding it in place, so I suspect it's only being held on by some type of adhesive.
Me neither. I do not know what happened to Accel's quality over the last couple of years but it seems to have gone done hill horribly.
I know of no one to ever run that uglyass gray cover.
Considering you can get a summit coil that is BETTER & only $30. The Accel would be the last one I would buy.
I would double check your application Jake. The 1986 original distributor for your car uses the red/white wires not the red/yellow as you mentioned. The last Corvette to use the red/yellow combination coil wires was the 1981 Corvette. I just looked it up in the Accel on line catalog. The in the stock cap type coil you need is the "Brute Thunder Coil" #140015

Hello Jake!
My 86 has red & white, unless you have a different module you should use a red & white wired coil. I do have a good coil that I don't need that I could send to you if you need one.
