Default ASR/ABS acting weird

For the last few days, my ASR and ABS lights have been coming on about half the time. The brakes feel fine, but the ASR is really weird. One morning it kept kicking on and off every two seconds. I switched it off, but it isn't working at all even when it is on now. I discovered this yesterday when I hit second gear on the freeway on-ramp. Almost turned me sideways from the fishtailing. Any suggestions?

Check your brake fluid level. Both the ABS/ASR systems rely on proper fluid levels to function properly.

Are you seeing a weird display on your car's DIC i.e. multiple guage alerts, flashing lights, etc? That's one sure-fire indication of low brake fluid levels.

No flashing lights. They either go out when I start the car, or stay on during the whole drive. I'll check the fluid, I think it's alright, but I do need to do a complete flush of the system.

I was getting an ASR/ABS code as well as a low voltage code for the TPS. I traced it down to and replaced the connectors in the TPS plug and it took care of the problem. Get a male pin and check the female connectors in the TPS plug. If they don't fit very snuggly they can cause problems. The module for the ASR/ABS gets a signal from the TPS.

Thanks for the advice. This afternoon they worked perfect. I added about 1 oz of fluid. Maybe an electrical gremlin, but I will take your advice.

I know you have been getting some differing opinions, and you should probably check them all out. I was having a similiar idiot lights going off intermittently over the period of a few days. I added brake fluid to the master cylinder resevior and the lights went away. I then decided it was time for a brake overhaul anyway and put the J55 GS option on with new SS lines and fluid. No lights have ever came back since then.
Good Luck

you don't mention your tires. I have found that once the tires start to get thin, they really set off the ASR.

Otherwise, the fluid, TPS and such are great starts.

The tires are still good. This morning the lights were back on and the ASR was non-functional.

check the codes... The EBCM stores codes unique to the ABS/ASR system. I would not be surprised if a wheel sensor has failed or something.
