Default Serpentine belt question

I am having a belt sound coming from my '86 and you can really hear it when you put your foot on the pedal.Last Summer, my dad replaced the belt because it was making sounds and it was clearly worn smack out. When he changed it all he did was push the tensioner down and put the new belt on.Now,it will act up at idle and when you get on the pedal it sounds kind of like an exhaust leak{although it's not}At idle it is a slow sound, but when you push the pedal down it speeds up.My questions are:did he put the belt on right?Could the noise be from the tensioner?{it was out of the range when he put it on}Thanks guys!

There should be a serpentine belt routing diagram on the radiator shroud. That will tell you if the belt is on right. The tensioner it'self has some wear indicator marks. Have you taken a look at those?

The belt tensioner can wear out. Also look for fliud leaks that can also contaminate the belt, the A/C compressor can leak it's oil out and get the belt wet.
