Default Front Cross-member replacement

Has anyone had to replace their front cross-member? I just got my '84 back from the frame shop, and aparantly mine was bent, and then (attemptedly) bent back.

I'm a capable mechanic with a decent working garage, so I'm thinking I'll do it myself.

Does anyone have any mods they would suggest while I'm in there? I'll already have the lower swingarms off and the motor mounts disconnected.

I've heard there were some changes made to the suspension after '84, and thought I might take advantage of them if possible.

I think this is going to be a pretty big job, so any advice is appreciated!

thanks
Joe

Top arms have to be disconnected so sub frame will drop out between frame rails, 4 bolts /side hold subframe in
Suspension up dates are after '88 when whole front geometry was changed. No later parts fit early , A arm mounting points changed etc.
Later susp in also wider.

You make it sound easy. The book calls for 14hrs, how long is it really going to take? Guestimate of course.

thanks

14 hrs would be geared toward a pro. If I were doing it, I would plan on 20 hrs.

14 hrs?
Is that R/R complete X member or replace the arms etc while out.
Jack up car and support off frame rails by firewall
Support engine and remove engine mount bolts.
Remove alt,air pump ,A/c pump and inner wheel well for working room
Remove P/S pump so hoses to rack can be disconnected
Disco steering shaft
Disco rollbar mounts from frame
Remove braces under engine to X member and braces forward to bumper.
Disco top shock mounts
Support bottom A arm (to take tension off spring) and take out 2 mounting bolts hold top arm.
Pull arm clear and lower jack.
Take weight of X member on jack and undo 8 mounting bolts.
Lower X member,May require some leverage to seperate as tight fit between rails.
