Default universal cat?

need to buy a catalytic converter. just assume I'm an idiot cause I feel pretty lost.
Is a 'universal' cat going to be okay for my car? I don't know what size my exhaust is, though I know it's stock before the cat. Should I look for something other than stock? Performance stuff I mean? I can spend up to 200$ i figure and I'd like to get the nicest part I can get but I'm frustrated by parts searches that turn up 'universal' cats all the time.

Any particular suggestions?

You need a 3" cat. Get a Carsound hi-flow cat. I've bought two from ebay vendors for under $60 each. Getting the air tube to work with it will require some modification, as would any universal cat.

The carsound flows as good as the expensive random tech.

When you say 'modification', is this the kind of thing a monroe muffler shop would balk at? I don't plan on doing my own work in this cold weather after all.

You might want to verify with the muffler shop that they'll allow you to purchase the cat from a source other than them.
