automatic transmission problem
I have an 84 crossfire with automatic transmission. When it switches to the second gear, it is like it has a slipping clutch. When I increase power, the RPM increases much. The first, third and fourth all work fine.
I got the advice to change oil and filter. Is that all it takes? I hope so, but I am afraid it isn´t.
Please advice me what to do.
Nico
I had somewhat of a similar problem in an '85 that I had...except it was first gear. I had the valve body changed (along with installing a stall converter and a shift kit!). Mine even refused to allow me to pull the tranny down into first gear after a shift to second.
When you get it apart, you will likely find that the band is burnt and the reverse input drum is likely scored up. When you have it rebuilt, be sure the tech properly sets the servo pin length using the correct selective pin. Too many guys do not do this and the problem occurs again very prematurely.

Thanks a lot for the info guys, is worth a lot for me. I found a guy specialized in automatic transmissions in a vilage only 5 miles away. He seems to have a good name, so I think I don´t have much choice. I will pass on the info, than he might think I know so he may be more carefull than the avarage. Keep you posted

I will ask the guys where the reparation is done. It may be quite difficult to get parts here in Spain. But the regular parts for the 700R4 seem no problem. Because the 4th gear is ok and it is only the second that slips, it may be hydraulics. This because I guess that the band is shared for the 2nd and the 4th gear
I SAW A NICE CADILLAC
Now you all think: what kind of a guy is this... A NICE cadillac?
But the engine bay was extended a little and they build a Rolce Royce Merlin into the car. 27000 CC of swpt volume V12, That is what I call a torque monster!!!
Hello Nico,
I live in Germany and understand the difficulty of getting a good shop in Europe. I have visited Malaga many times and I really enjoy it there and in Marbella. There is a US Naval Base in Rota that might be able to get parts for you if you know anyone working in that area. There is also a US Air Force base in Moron.
I have exactly the same problem but in 2-3rd, just after I had the transmission rebuilt by a German shop. We are now replacing the valve body. I was under the impression that the valve body was replaced during a rebuild...does anyone know if this is true or not? I also had a trans-go installed and it might be a factor.
Its good to hear of a corvette owner in Spain. I plan on living there in the future and would like to know if you find any good repair shops.
A valve body replacement during a rebuild is not at all common on the 700r4/4l60. It is made of cast iron and has steel valves. Wear is almost unheard of. A 4l60e is a different story. The valve body is aluminum and occasionally a valve body needs to be changed or sleeved to correct it.
