My 93 LT1 had a sys message and security light would occassionly flash simulataneously for about 2 seconds and go away. The car was still running fine no problems. Now the car will crank but not start, and the sys message in the dash does not go away. Doesn't appear to have a security issue as no alarms are set off, additionally I have read that the UTD would prevent the car from cranking, and it cranks over fine with good battry voltage. Any ideas where to start with this?
Thanks Guys, the local dealership is working on this now (with my help and suggestions). The change of the key didn't work, and he has requested a new ecm, which I am getting now. I will let you know how it goes.
Additionally the car will start if left alone for a while (time period varies). When it starts it will run fine for a while before it shuts down, but after it shuts down or is turned off it will not restart. It cranks fine. The technician says he thinks the security system is disabling the fuel pump.
hello, if you get the problem solved, please send me a email to eit72@yahoo.com. I live in mexico and cant get the problem fixed. My problem is in the inst/avg sign appears a SYS message for 3 secs. and goes out for 15 secs. This is continous for ever. How do I fix this?
thanks. Emilio from Mexico City
Changed the ECM problem went away, and the car is running fine. I must add that the we did go through the steps in the Shop manual before we decided to change the ECM. I also had the prom reprogrammed by TPIS at the same time.
I have seen a couple of posts with this same exact problemo...Including myself!!! It starts ok and runs fine, then the SYS will flash as well as the security light, the service ASR will light up on the driver information crenter. It will continue to run fine in this condition with the SYS and security flashing then going out a few second at a time. The Service ASR stays on. But once you turn it off the car will not restart. If I wait a while (The time varies from 5 to 20 minutes) the light show goes away and it will start. Then I drive off and start the whole ordeal again. I ordered an ECM and I hope, like you, I get this solved....I will post on here if it worked for me or not.
THe combo of "sys" and "security" lights flashing indicates a problem with the serial data link, in that the CCM is not chatting with the ECM. When that happens (as is the case with my 92 right now!) the handshake doesn't happen, a nd so the CCM executes a FEDS - Fuel Enable Data Stream failure, and the gas gets shut off.
No go. And you should get a code 41 for CCM faults (when grounding "A" to "G" on the ALDL port) plus an "ERR" display for the ECM faults.
I am trying to find out if MY problem is a module, or the wiring that connects the comms between the ECM, the CCM and the EBCM (electronic brake control module) - oh, and the HVAC programmer.
I don't want to buy a new module then find out it's a wiring issue. I'll keep you posted, if you'll keep me informed!
EDIT: Where did you guys source your ECM, and - if I may - at what cost?
I am getting a "sys" where the oil temp, volt, etc number would be. This comes on for a couple seconds then goes away. No other lights or warnings come on? Any ideas

Yes... that means your CCM (main computer) is seeing SOME error someplace. There should be an error code set that you can retrieve by shorting pins at the ALDL connector, under the dash above the right knee of the driver.
The ECM came from TPIS check it out on their website www.tpis.com and the cost for the 92/93 LT1 ECM on exchange was $175.
FWIW - I ended up needing a new ECM, and tried ordering it from TPiS... guess what? No longer available. Ever. "Go to the dealer, and good luck." Only other option is to send the ECM out for remanufacturing, which takes a while, plus travel time.
At least I found a local dealer that had one in $tock. Wahhh...
