Does anybody know if the 4+3 can be flat towed without damaging it..I usually pull my C4s home on the dolly backwards but if the front ends are worn they tend to dance around, every one is a different adventure..The latest one is a 4+3 car and I'm wondering if I can pull it straight ahead for 400 miles without tearing up the trans....Thanks guys..
As long as it isn't locked into overdrive I think you'll be ok. The rear wheels and driveshaft are what actuate the tranny flui pump so it will be moving fluid up to the radiator during the tow.
That's not an option when on the road away from home..That's why I usually haul em backwards but I was hoping to avoid the "variables" if I could. Manual trans cars are good to go but the 4+3 is a different kind of animal.
If you're gonna drag the drivewheels, you should pull the driveshaft....
If you were just going around the block I would say go for it, but 400 miles is a long tow.... I suggest either a flatbed truck or pull that driveshaft to be safe. I drove a flatbed tow truck for 5 years and have seen more than one trans seize up on a tow where the drivewheels were draggin..Then either Iwould have to go get the car in the flatbed once it happened, or my cohort in the wrecker would be pullin a driveshaft on the side of the road (fun,fun,fun).......It was usually automatics, dont think Ive seen a manual seizeup, but theres a first time for everything
besides if you pull it before you hit the road, you wont be pulling it on the side of some mountain there in NC.
Whatever you do good luck
EDIT....I just read your latest post, I dont know what else to tell 'ya, if pulling the shaft isn't an option.. 400 miles is a long way to hold your breath .... good luck
