Default Rear Main Seal

I have a 93 LT-1 with 46K miles. I am changing the clutch and since I have it apart I want to address a slight oil leak. I pulled the pan and I think I should also replace the rear main seal just to be safe. My Helms manual indicates I need a special GM tool. I checked the tech posts and I couldn't find any tips on pulling and installing the seal without the tool. Is this possible or should I have my local Chevy dealer press in the seal??

Thanks,

Jim

If the adapter is off the block, during new engine assembly, I sit it on a bench and place a scrap piece of 2 by 6 over the top. Then I carefully press(whack) it into place. I then wet the paper gasket behind the adapter with oil and install it on the engine. If adapter is still on the engine, same 2 by 6 will carefully whack it on. As long as it goes in straight and true, you will be fine. No tool needed. Be sure to check the crank seal area to be sure a groove is not worn in the crank. If there is a groove, fel-pro makes a sleeve to install that fixes it.

If you can find something that matches the outer diameter of the seal to place against it while applying pressure, no special tool is needed. It sounds as if you've probably installed a few seals before so just use common sense and all should be fine.

On a 2-piece you have to set the Thrust when removing the rear main cap. I would think it is the same for a 1 piece, but dont know for sure.

no, no thrust setting is required on the 1 piece rear mains.
