Seems to me there are two different widths for a complete dana 44 set up in a c4!
What was the change over year?
What part was it that made the width different?
What are the two measurements for each diff.?
Thanks-Dominic

They're all the same as far as the differentials and halfshafts. The difference in hub to hub width is all in the spindle/hub ***'y. I've got an '85 D44 in my '95. Both the D36 and the D44 even use the same halfshafts in all years of C4s. Oh, and the wider hub to hub distance started with the '88s.

Does that mean if you change the Front and rear hub assemblies and caliper mounting brackets on an 84, to the 88 style, you could use 88 and up wheels with out the spacers? I have also been trying to figure out where the difference in width was.

Yes, it's been done. I'm not sure exactly what all else needs changed but I would think the camber arms, the tie rod and possibly the forward links and their body mounts. The front would get a little more complicated unless you can just swap spindles. The early and late A-arms mount with a little different geometry at the frame so if they have to be changed too, I don't think it would be worth it. Obviously I don't have all of the answers here, hopefully someone will.

Wrong.
The rear hubs are the same 84-96
The fronts are different but the dimensions are the same.
The increase in width is built into the spindle at front and hub carrier at rear. You would need a late carrier assembly but could reuse your hub.
Front is a lot more complex as mounting point at chassis were changed.Easier to run spacers.
